Unique Opportunity in Academic Medicine

Dear Friends,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and enjoying the summer weather in Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh or wherever else you are.

As you may know, I left Cedar-Sinai Medical Center recently to accept a position as the founding associate program director for internal medicine residency program at the Eisenhower Medical Center, an excellent community hospital, in the greater Palm Springs area, California. Along with Dr. Roy Young who is the program director, we are launching a new internal medicine residency program. Working under the guidance and mentorship of Roy, who has led the internal medicine residency program at UCLA with his exemplary academic leadership for many years, is both a privilege and an extraordinary learning experience for me and our entire GME team.

We are now recruiting core faculty for the program. Our first house staff is scheduled to arrive in 2013. Prior to this time the program is going through the accreditation process by ACGME. We are optimistic that we will receive an initial provisional approval by next year. That will leave us with adequate time to focus on recruitment of the first group of excellent residents who would start in July 2013. There are exciting opportunities for someone, with at least 2-5 years experience as an internist with strong interest in academic medicine and scholarly activities, to be a founding core faculty in the internal medicine residency program.

In addition to Core Faculty positions, we are also hiring Academic Hospitalists. Also, we are planning to hire a Chief Resident for the program as soon as the program starts in July 2013, who we hope later on would want to stay as a faculty at Eisenhower or continue to practice as a primary care in the area. The ideal candidate is someone who's now in their intern year, and might want to explore this unique opportunity as the founding chief resident of the program in 2013.

The medical center itself is a spectacular setting and very well supported by the community that surrounds it. The Board of Directors of the hospital along with key community individuals is very eager for Eisenhower Medical Center to become a first class teaching Hospital. The financial backing the hospital enjoys means that the residency itself will not be responsible for service needs. Compensations and benefits for both faculty and residents are set to be very competitive. Any and all experiences the residents will have are designed to enhance education. I personally believe that it is a unique opportunity to create something very different from any other residency programs in the country.

Additionally, the medical center has entered to an academic affiliation with the University of Southern California (USC), School of Medicine. This has provided the USC medical students a unique opportunity for some of their required clerkship rotations to be here at Eisenhower medical center. In addition, faculty physicians who are involved in teaching of the medical students and prospective residents will be awarded clinical academic appointment through USC, school of medicine.

As a bonus, I have to say the Palm Springs area has unbelievable recreational opportunities and exquisite natural beauty. Other advantages are its proximity (2 hours drive) to Metropolitan Los Angeles or San Diego.

I hope you or a colleague you know may have an interest in wanting to explore a position here at Eisenhower Medical Center to join Roy and me, and help to shape the new residency program. So please spread the word, as we are eager to meet and talk with you or anyone who might have an interest in this unique opportunity.

Hope to hear from you, soon.

Mehrnaz
